Lansing: “There were close to 2000 sailors and Marines … and then there were perhaps 2 or 300, as I remember it, civilians who probably were 4F, were unable to join the services. So the only normal contingent really was just this 300 group. That whole place really became a Naval academy. All the buildings were Dartmouth College but the essence of the place was Naval academy.”
