Peer Mentoring

Who? Anyone in the Library is welcome to participate. The peer mentoring program is geared for those doing any type of instruction, workshops for classes, presentations to large or small groups, and other types of teaching sessions.

What? Participants in the peer mentoring program will be assigned a partner. When one of you has a teaching session approaching you and your partner will a) meet a day or two ahead of the session and discuss the “pre-observation talking points” sheet, b) attend the teaching session during which the observer will observe and make notes on the areas of focus, and c) meet a within two days after the session to discuss the “post-observation talking points”.

How? Email Laura Barrett and let her know you’d like to participate in the peer mentoring program. She will match people up as partners. If you and a colleague already know you want to work together, just write Laura and let her know you are joining and already are paired up.

Why? Peer mentoring provides great opportunities for thoughtful reflection on our own teaching styles and goals. Do you ever wonder if your speaking rate is too fast or slow? Do the examples you use clarify the point you want to make? Are the activities you plan effective in helping the students learn? Peer mentoring is a great way to get focused feedback on your own teaching, and to help a colleague by giving thoughtful feedback on their teaching. Additionally, we often learn the most by sitting back and watching others teach.
