Welcome Letter to New Students

September 7, 2021

Dear New Students:

I want to welcome each of you to Dartmouth College! You are about to begin one of the most exciting times in your life, and everyone in the Department of Safety and Security (DoSS) wants to help make your "Dartmouth Experience" a safe one.

You often hear that Dartmouth is a special place, and it is! Its depth of character, traditions, diversity, commitment to academic excellence, as well as its beautiful natural surroundings contribute to making Dartmouth such an exemplary academic environment. We want you to enjoy the campus and take full advantage of everything Dartmouth offers and, in doing so, we encourage you to take appropriate personal and collective precautions when living, learning, working, and playing at Dartmouth.

We take your safety very seriously and we want you to do the same. Dartmouth takes the issues of sexual assault, hazing, and the dangers of alcohol consumption very seriously. We ask that you commit to preventing these issues from interfering with your educational experience. Your safety is, and always will be, our department's greatest concern. Please know that we are always available to you, and we encourage you to contact us for any reason, at any time.

You can reach us around the clock at 603-646-4000, or by using our safety app, LiveSafe, which you can easily download and install in your smartphone. The app provides you access to campus resources and information; lets you easily contact 911 and DoSS in emergencies; and, if you prefer, allows you to report anonymously. Download the app and make it part of your campus safety toolbox!

In the event of a catastrophic event occurring on or near campus, we will reach you via DartAlert (Dartmouth’s emergency notification system), which is a multimodal system of communications comprised of an outdoor siren and audible speakers, mass email, cellphone (voice and/or text), telephone, and desktop alerts. If you have not done so, sign up for DartAlert, install Alertus in your desktop or laptop computer, and download and install LiveSafe in your smartphone. You can do all of this using this link: Sign Up for Emergency Notifications

DoSS provides Dartmouth with professional safety and security services which include incident response, investigation, and follow up of all security related matters that come to our attention. We strive to engage our community via education, information sharing and training programs, as our strongest ally in deterrence and prevention. The members of this department are dedicated to the Mission of the College and, as stated in our Department’s Mission Statement.

We are here to help you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will see us around as you enjoy the campus, so please feel free to say hello or stop by and visit our offices on the 3rd floor of 5 Rope Ferry Road.

Again, welcome to Dartmouth and we look forward to you having a safe and wonderful Dartmouth Experience!
