The French and Italian Department offers excellent opportunities for study
abroad. A total of eleven or twelve term-long programs take place annually:
eight in France and three or four in Italy. Some of these, known as LSA for
Language Study Abroad allow students with the equivalent of two terms of
college French or Italian to complete their Dartmouth language requirement
while living with a French or Italian host family and taking courses in
grammar, literature and civilization. The French LSA site is the culturally
rich city of Lyon, while the Italian LSA takes place in Rome. For intermediate
students, the French LSA+ program site is in Toulouse and the Italian LSA+
program is in Rome. For advanced students, Dartmouth has designed the FSP, or
Foreign Study Program. Participants in the French FSP go to Paris, and follow a
course of study consisting of literature, history and art history.
Student groups are always accompanied by a Dartmouth faculty member, who
teaches one of the on-site courses. Other courses are taught by local French
and Italian faculty associated with area universities. The total linguistic and
cultural immersion inherent to LSA, LSA+ and FSP is a crucial element of their
success.
Applicants must apply online at the Off-Campus Programs website at www.dartmouth.edu/~ocp.
