The following memo from the President further explains the College's commitment to providing communication avenues for these purposes.

To: Members of the Dartmouth College Community From: President Jim Yong Kim Dartmouth strives in all its activities to adhere to the highest standards of honesty and integrity. This is no less true in the College's business dealings than in its academic endeavors. In 2004, the College reaffirmed its commitment to this goal by adopting a Code of Ethical Business Conduct. The Code articulates principles of business ethics concerning such matters as regulatory compliance, contract and grant obligations, conflict of interest, and confidentiality. To promote adherence to the Code and respect for the values it reflects, the College has established a set of "Business Ethics Helplines." They are described below. The Helplines provide a mechanism for College personnel to raise questions or concerns about legal compliance or business ethics. An individual who does not wish to be identified may raise his or her concern anonymously. The reputation and success of Dartmouth depend on each member of the community following applicable laws, regulations, and College procedures, and dealing fairly and honestly with each other and with those outside the College. This precept is not new. As long ago as 1919, former President William Jewett Tucker observed that "[a] college administrator is expected to be more than a financier, more than a school master. He [or she] must be in some tangible and expressive way the 'corporate conscience of the College.'" I hope you will use the Business Ethics Helplines as we renew our commitment to this guiding principle. |
