Interest in Humanities 1 & 2: The faculty of the Humanities sequence are eager to create a cohort of students who want to delve into a broad range of works of literature as well as engage with other art forms such as music, visual media, and theater. Please write one to two paragraphs to tell us what you as an individual would bring to the course. Perhaps you already have considerable experience with some aspect(s) of Western literature and want to explore further; or perhaps you’re totally unfamiliar with any of the titles on our booklist and simply find yourself intrigued. You may know another language or culture, or you may be someone who has always enjoyed debating ideas. So tell us about yourself. Use this space to define what draws you to apply for this course, knowing that we’re looking for a variety of perspectives, approaches, and interests for Humanities 1 & 2.
Essay: Choose an extended work—a book, a collection of poetry, a composition, a painting—you have encountered recently that was fascinating, infuriating, beautiful, challenging or otherwise memorable. If it’s a book, it can be fiction or non-fiction and of any genre (e.g., novel, short stories, play, history, philosophy). How and why did the work make an impression on you?
