The Licensing Program was established in 1980 to protect, control, and license the Dartmouth College name and identifying marks on commercial products. Its primary role is to register trademarks and authorize their use on products for public consumption, ensuring that all items bearing the College's marks meet high standards of quality and taste. This helps maintain Dartmouth’s reputation as one of the nation’s premier Ivy League institutions and promotes public awareness and support.

Since 1769, Dartmouth has continuously used its name and marks in connection with educational services, making it one of the most recognized college brands in the United States. The College holds multiple federally registered trademarks that safeguard its identity and integrity. The Dartmouth brand appears across a range of products and services, including promotional materials, advertising, sponsorships, co-branding partnerships, and affinity programs.

Use of the College name and marks requires prior written permission from the Trademark Office, including for departments, student groups, and organizations wishing to associate their activities or merchandise with Dartmouth. All merchandise production must utilize vendors from the College’s approved list to ensure compliance with quality standards and ethical labor practices.

Dartmouth is a member of the Fair Labor Association (FLA) and the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC), organizations dedicated to protecting workers’ rights in the production of insignia merchandise. Licensees must adhere to the Dartmouth code of conduct.

The Licensing Program is administered by the Office of the General Counsel in partnership with Exemplar Associates. As Dartmouth’s global trademark licensing agency, Exemplar Associates handles licensing applications, agreements, royalty payments, quality control, and compliance monitoring.
