On Top of It All

Dartmouth first-years and their parents got to see the College from virtually every vantage point during First Year Family Weekend at the end of April: on horseback, down on the (Organic) Farm, along the banks of the Connecticut River, under the stars at Shattuck Observatory, and on top of everything in the Baker Library tower. Tours of the tower, which stands nearly 200 feet above the campus, gave students and their families an opportunity to literally see it all. The ascent itself can be a challenge, up 95 steps, past the inside of the enormous clock face, and then into the room below the famous bells-one of the few remaining sets at a college or university that hasn't been replaced by electronics. Just outside that room is the walkway around the tower, with panoramic views of the Green to the south, Vermont to the west, Dartmouth Row to the east, and the White Mountains to the north.

Height, however, wasn't the only perspective offered. "The students themselves plan the weekend's events," says Gail Zimmerman, dean of first-year students, "and parents are always impressed to see the College from their son or daughter's own perspective."
