Freedman Recognized by AJC

At a gala dinner in New York in early December 2003, President Emeritus James O. Freedman received the National Distinguished Leadership Award from the American Jewish Committee (AJC). The award "recognizes those individuals who have served AJC with integrity and distinction, bringing their dynamic talents to bear in their community and beyond to help achieve a more just and humane society for us all."

Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Foundation, delivered the evening's keynote speech, and President James Wright spoke movingly of his long friendship with Freedman, noting that "this distinguished award itself will now take on an even greater distinction because of your association with it."

Freedman, who was president of Dartmouth from 1987 through 1998, has received numerous awards and honors, including the William O. Douglas First Amendment Freedom Award from the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, the David Ross Civil Rights Award, and the Gilda Radner Award from the Wellness Community of Greater Boston. He is past president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is recognized as one of the nation's most distinguished educational leaders.
