David M. Kelley (Doctor of Science)

David KelleyJune 8, 2014

DAVID M. KELLEY, as one of the world's most innovative designers and educators, you've engaged mankind's most challenging problems with a holistic perspective.

Your desire to reflect human behavior in our interaction with technology has set you apart since your early days as an engineer with Boeing and NCR. As a student in Stanford's Joint Program in Design, you developed a unique ability to push the boundaries of creativity beyond tradition.

Your contributions in design have received numerous national and international awards, including recognition from the National Academy of Engineering for "unusual accomplishment in the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology."

As CEO and co-founder of IDEO, perhaps the world's most influential product design firm, you brought your vision of technology serving the user to life. Your work with Steve Jobs revolutionized the way we interact with technology and its aesthetic. In fact, some of your innovations have transcended functionality to find homes in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and San Francisco.

Returning to Stanford to teach and create the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, you've inspired a new generation of students to approach design challenges by understanding the needs of the user, and ensured your place in the history of design thinking.

For your tireless pursuit of innovation in every aspect of your professional and academic work; for your passion to inspire creative confidence through your published works and public lectures; and for significant contributions to the fields of engineering and design, which have impacted our society in countless ways, we are proud to award you with the honorary degree, Doctor of Science.
