History of the CCN and cognitive neuroscience at Dartmouth

The CCN was founded in the late 1990s by Michael Gazzaniga. In 2004, Michael Gazzaniga moved to the University of California Santa Barbara to found the Sage Center for the Study of the Mind. In 2008, James Haxby moved to Dartmouth to become the second Director of the CCN, a role in which he served until 2021. In July 2021, Tor Wager was named as the third Director of the CCN.
In 1999, Dartmouth became the first college to have a functional brain imaging center dedicated to cognitive neuroscience research.
Under the auspices of the CCN, the Summer Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience at Dartmouth (aka 'Brain Camp') trained scores of young cognitive neuroscientists fostering the rapid growth of the discipline.
Since 2011, the CCN has hosted international summer workshops on various themes in computational cognitive neuroscience. The CCN is also home for two widely-used software platforms for neuroscience computing – PyMVPA and Neurodebian – that are used at hundreds of research institutions worldwide.
