AP, IB, A-Level, & Transfer Credits & Placement
Advanced Placement, A-Level, and International Baccalaureate Examinations
Dartmouth offers course credits, exemptions and placement in some subject areas for outstanding results on Advanced Placement, A-Level, and International Baccalaureate exams. On this page you will find the latest information we have available. Please note that these policies are reviewed each year and may change from one year to the next.
Changes to AP/IB credit policy for the Class of 2018
Beginning with the entering Class of 2018, Dartmouth will no longer grant course credit for AP or IB examinations. Dartmouth will continue to offer exemptions and placement in some subject areas. This policy change will not take effect until the fall of 2014, and it will not impact current applicants to Dartmouth who intend to enroll in the fall of 2013.

Credit for College Coursework
First-year students may also be eligible to earn placement or credit for college courses taken before matriculation at Dartmouth:
- Entering first-year students may transfer up to 4 courses from other colleges or universities.
- Online course work is not eligible for transfer credit.
- Not all departments grant transfer credit for courses taken prior to enrollment at Dartmouth, and each course is evaluated on an individual basis.
Some academic departments offer placement exams for matriculating students. A few are available online; the others are administered on campus during orientation.
Transfer Student Credits
Transfer students may receive up to a maximum of 17 credits. The Dean of Undergraduate Students has detailed information about credit for transfer students.
