Enrollment in Undergraduate Divisional Internship Courses

Frequently Asked Questions

Divisional Internship Courses

Enrollment in these courses requires an internship related to the student’s major. Students apply academic principles and skills outside the classroom and submit required written work reflecting on their experience and how it enhances and advances the student’s academic program. Students receive a pass/fail (CT/NC) grade for the course which carries 0.10 credits on their Dartmouth undergraduate transcript.

Internship Courses

There are four divisional internship courses. Students' internship must be directly related to the students' major. To review what Divisional Internship Course is appropriate for your major, please see the Department & Programs listing on the Faculty of Arts & Sciences page:

Internship Term - Students partake in the internship during an Off/Leave term in their D-Plan.

Divisional Course Enrollment Term -

During the term immediately following the internship term, students complete an On/Resident term, during which they are enrolled in the Divisional Internship Course and complete their final written report. Students will then receive a final grade of Credit (CT) or No Credit (NC) on their undergraduate transcript.

Note that students may attend an Off-Campus Program or Exchange Program during the term following their internship instead of an On/Resident term but must first request a letter of support from the Associate Dean for International and Interdisciplinary Studies, granting permission to enroll in the Divisional Internship course while on a study away program. Students will still be held to the requirements of the Internship course and must complete the final written report while on a study away program.

Guidelines for Final Written Report – Final written report must be submitted to the appropriate instructor via Canvas site and should report on:

  • The specific work the student carried out day-to-day, as well as descriptions of major projects in which the student participated and their roles in those projects
  • The key challenges the student faced during the internship
  • The most important things the students learned from the internship experience
  • How the internship experience affected the student’s career plans and expectations.
  • Favorite and least favorite parts of the internship experience
  • Whether the student would consider returning to the same organization to work after graduation from Dartmouth
  • The reflection paper should be at least 6 pages
  • Supervisor’s assessment of student performance, if possible
      • Some organizations have policies prohibiting supervisors from producing written evaluations. At the time of proposal, students are unlikely to be aware of such a policy. Student final reports should either (i) include an appendix with the written evaluation from their supervisor, or (ii) indicate clearly that the organization at which they interned prohibits supervisors from producing written evaluations.

Application Form

Students submit their Divisional Internship Course Application to the Registrar's Office by the posted deadline, which is around two weeks prior to the start of the internship term.

The Registrar’s Office will forward your internship project request to the appropriate instructor for review.

The instructor will review the description to ensure the internship is appropriate for the student's major. If rejected, the instructor will notify the student and provide a brief rationale for the rejection. If approved, the instructor will notify the student and the Registrar's Office, who will enroll the student in the appropriate Divisional Internship course.

For additional information see the Divisional Internship FAQ page.

Obtaining CPT (for international students only)

Once enrolled in the Divisional Internship course, OVIS will reach out to international students with instructions for requesting Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Students will need to provide OVIS with a dated and signed employment letter on employer letterhead, with location and dates of employment, supervisor and title, and a brief description of how the training is relevant to your program of study.

Once approved, OVIS will issue a new Form I-20 to the student with CPT authorization.

General information about CPT can be found on the OVIS website.
