Waldo: "The paths on the Common had been ploughed and the snow was piled up over your head on both sides of the path.  I happened to be walking back to North Fayerweather where they had put me at that time. There were two of these Naval guys in front of me. They were obviously from the South. And I actually heard one of them saying to the other, 'You know, it's a good thing we didn't win the Civil War. We would have had to occupy this damned region!'"
