Stephan Glatzel is a Full Professor at the University of Vienna. He received his doctorate degree in Soil Science at the University of Hohenheim. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre for Climate and Global Change Research at McGill University in Montréal, Glatzel worked as a research assistant at University of Göttingen, followed by a position as Professor for Landscape Ecology and Site Evaluation at the University of Rostock. In 2013, he was appointed Professor of Geoecology at the University of Vienna.
His main area of expertise is wetland ecology. His contribution to wetland research is internationally well acknowledged and most of his >125 publications are on wetland carbon cycling and biogeochemistry. He has supervised 76 MSc and diploma theses, 10 doctoral theses and supervised 2 habilitations. Glatzel is editor-in-chief of the international journal Catena. He has successfully acquired funding for scientific and technical personnel as well as research infrastructure and raised ca. 5 million EUR of research funding. Glatzel has been appointed as European Technical Expert on the RAMSAR STRP twice, authored Austria`s first mire strategy as well as the floodplain strategy 2030+ and is a PI in LIFE-AMooRe, Austria’s large mire restoration endeavor and is involved in many other national and international mire protection activities. He established the first LTER comprehensive ecosystem research sites in an Alpine peatland and a Steppe Lake.
