Beginning in Winter 2012, The Women's and Gender Studies Program will sponsor one Women's and Gender Studies Major or Minor with a $4,000 grant to spend winter term as a DARDAR-WGST-Dickey Intern in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the country's largest urban area. DARDAR is the result of combining the words Dar es Salaam and Dartmouth, evocative of the Swahili word "dada" (sister).
The WGST Program is teaming up with the Dickey Center for International Understanding to provide opportunities for our majors and minors to broaden their international perspectives and their understanding of the intersections of gender, culture and health. In 2007, the Global Health Initiative/Dickey Center established the DARDAR-Dickey Internship to allow undergraduate students to intern at one or more of its DARDAR Programs or affiliates during a leave-term. WGST-DARDAR interns work in a variety of health, education, and community outreach projects with partners at the the Bibi Jann School or the Grandma-2-Grandma program (Bibi-2-Bibi in Swahili). Bibi-2-Bibi is a community-based group mobilizing grandmothers who are raising one or more of their orphaned grandchildren. This self-directed group has focused on educational and income-generating projects to empower the grandmothers while providing a supportive space for sharing stories and experiences. DARDAR interns are supervised by the program advisors in Tanzania and will participate in weekly conference calls with Global Health Initiative advisors.
Prior to departure interns must participate in several detailed pre-departure orientation sessions and will make their own travel and living arrangements with the support and advice of the Global Health Initiative team.
The WGST Internship is available to WGST majors and minors at sophomore level or above. All WGST majors and minors are encouraged to apply. We especially encourage applications from those students who have taken related courses (on gender and health, gender and development, or on Africa, for example) or who have demonstrated international experience either through relevant coursework or time abroad (a term or more).
Applicants must be returning to campus for at least one term after completing the internship. Internship recipients are required to write a reflection paper on how the internship has deepened their understanding of the intersections between gender, global health, and their place in community development. This paper will be kept on file in the Women's and Gender Studies and Dickey Center offices. Returning interns agree to participate as requested in workshops or information sessions relating to internships in general. WGST interns will be invited to present their experiences in Tanzania at the annual WGST Student Academic Symposium.
