Academic Suspension

Suspension is the likely consequence of flagrantly or persistently unsatisfactory scholarship. A student must leave campus within 48 hours of being notified of the Suspension and may not return to campus without prior permission from the appropriate dean. Students under suspension may not participate in College academic or extracurricular activities; may not remain in College or coed, fraternity, sorority housing; and may not progress toward completion of their Dartmouth degrees by taking courses at other institutions while under suspension. Readmission following suspension is not automatic and must be by application to the Dean's Office. Readmission will normally occur only after an absence of three terms.

A student in satisfactory standing will be suspended if he or she receives two grades of D and one grade of E (or NC) or at least two grades of E (or NC) in one term. A student on Risk will be suspended if he or she receives three grades of D or at least one grade of D and one grade of E (or NC). A student on Warning will be suspended if he or she receives two grades of D or one grade of E (or NC) in one term, and a student on Probation will be suspended if he or she receives one grade of D in one term. A student whose grades would place him or her on Probation for a second time will be suspended.

Suspension carries with it the following consequences:

  • the action is recorded in the student's file in the Office of the Dean of the College and is temporarily reflected on academic records and transcripts while the student is subject to suspension;
  • a notification letter will normally be sent to parents;
  • students returning from suspension are placed on Probation for their first term in residence. Further unsatisfactory scholarship would not entitle such students to receive notices of Risk or Warning prior to Probation or Separation.
