2012 Winter Carnival Snow Sculpture Contest

Unfortunately, due to a lack of snow, the 2012 Winter Carnival Snow Sculpture Contest has been canceled.

Winter Carnival is one of Dartmouth’s greatest traditions. The snow sculpture on the Green serves as a visible representation of the theme and the excitement of winter in Hanover. For many years, organizations across campus sponsored smaller thematic sculptures to complement the weekend’s activities. This year, the Green Key Society, the Winter Carnival Council, and the Collis Center for Student Involvement are sponsoring a snow sculpture contest in order to revive a storied tradition.

DetailsThe 2012 Winter Carnival poster

Who: Any College-recognized organization (including living units, athletic teams, alumni groups, and academic and administrative departments).

What: A contest held on the Green to select the best sculpture representing this year’s Carnival theme.

When: Carnival is one of the busiest weekends at Dartmouth. In order to allow students and others to participate in all of the various activities, we have limited the hours of building. Starting at noon on Thursday, February 9, organizations may start building a sculpture. Building hours are from noon to 10 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Friday, February 10. Judging will take place between 3:30-5 p.m. on Friday, February 10. During the judging, the Green Key Society, Winter Carnival Council and Collis will be giving out hot chocolate and snacks and welcoming the community.

Where: In order to participate in this contest, all sculptures must be built on the southwest quadrant of the Green (corner closest to Collis). Snow will be provided in a large pile on the Green. Large barrels and shovels will be provided to move snow. A hose will also be on-site to get water to wet-down your sculpture.

Why: Why not? Let’s revive a tradition!

How much: 1st place: $500; 2nd place: $300; 3rd place: $200—transferred to your organizational account. The winning organization will also be provided a sculpture trophy for display.

Safety Guidelines

  • No sculpture can exceed eight feet in height.
  • All sculptures must be clearly marked with the name of the organization sponsoring it. This can be etched in the snow or written on a sign. Markers and paper are available for use in Collis 303.
  • No overhangs are to extend greater than one foot in height or one foot out from support.
  • All sculptures should be of a non-interactive nature. (This means no areas are intended for people to walk on, crawl, stand, sit under, or climb.)
  • Sculptures may only be constructed of snow and ice. (No wood or metal should be incorporated in the structure of the snow sculpture.)
  • Content must fit with the theme and should be appropriate for all ages (i.e. nothing profane, vulgar, and/or offensive). Please note: The Green is a community gathering space. Families and the public will be able to and are invited to view all sculptures.
  • Groups are responsible for providing their own tools to sculpt (barrels and shovels are provided to move snow to individual sculpture locations). Groups may "rent" tools from the Collis Center for Student Involvement Office between the hours of 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday of Carnival (supplies are limited). Use of power tools (gas or electric) is prohibited.
  • Use of dye for snow is limited to non-toxic materials (food-coloring, etc).
  • Contest closes at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 10, and judging starts at 3:30 p.m. A community gathering will be sponsored by the Green Key Society, the Winter Carnival Council, and the Collis Center from 3:30-5 p.m. that night.
  • All sculptures on the Green that do not conform to safety guidelines or rules will be destroyed by FO&M and sponsoring organizational accounts may be charged for this labor.
