Melancon graduated with a major in history while completing his pre-medical requirements. He was awarded a grant from the John L. Murphy Family Fund, as well as the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, to support his work in cancer pharmacology and toxicology with Dr. Yolanda Sanchez. Melancon was also a varsity athlete, earning two letters as an outside linebacker for the Big Green. In addition, he served as vice president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., president of the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students (MAPS), the intern for the Office of Pluralism and Leadership, and the social chair of Palaeopitus senior society. One of his most valuable experiences at Dartmouth was his participation in an Alternative Spring Break trip to the Dominican Republic, where he assisted with community outreach initiatives in the small Haitian barrio of Samán. Off campus, he completed the SMDEP program at Yale University and also did a clinical research in his hometown of Dallas, Texas, at the Cardiopulmonary Research & Science Technology Institute. After the Presidential Fellowship, Melancon plans to pursue an MD/MBA dual degree program.
