Report Bias

All members of the Dartmouth Community have a responsibility to contribute to, and maintain, a welcoming and inclusive environment. If you are the target of, witness to, or even simply hear about any form of bias happening to a Dartmouth student, you should submit a Bias Impact Report immediately. These reports, which can be anonymous, assist the College in tracking, investigating, or responding to bias incidents in order to mitigate their impact on our community.
The Bias Impact Response Team (BIRT), along with the Office of Judicial Affairs, receives each report submitted online. Given that our practice is informed by the values of restorative justice, the BIRT members review EVERY submitted report in order to determine next steps which vary based upon the circumstances of each incident.
Please note: Bias, in and of itself, is not illegal and each state has different laws that govern hate crimes and hate incidents motivated by bias. Therefore, each report submitted is handled on a case-by-case basis. If you submit a report and provide your contact information, a BIRT member may invite you to meet in person. Working together with the BIRT member, you will develop a plan for next steps that takes into account your needs. Additionally, each submitted report serves as a data point of bias activity on our campus. We use this datum to inform the annual Clery Act reporting, and to select potential themes for IGD, the Diversity Peer Program, OPAL's termly Week in Community, and other educational programming for our community.
