Wednesday, April 18, 7:00 pm
Jaffe-Friede Gallery

The Studio Art Faculty and Exhibition Program is collaborating with Jewish Studies, the Humanities Center, and Creative Writing to bring the poet, Gerald Stern to campus for a reading on Tuesday, April 17th at 4:30 PM in the Wren Room. The next evening on Wednesday, April 18th at 7:00 PM, Stern will join Studio Art Artist-in-Residence, Louise Fishman in the Jaffe-Friede Gallery for a panel discussion entitled "Painting and Writing: Relationships Old and New".
The friendship between Gerald Stern and Louise Fishman began in the late 1950's when she studied poetry writing with him at the Tyler College of Art. Louise Fishman and Gerald Stern went on to become major figures in their respective arts, but both painter and poet faced many difficult challenges along the way. On this panel, they will discuss their individual journeys and what it was like to be a poet and painter in the late 50's and 60's. Gerald Stern has not only written poems about painting and art, he has created drawings through most of his adult life, while Louise has both studied and written poetry. They will discuss the commonalities of poetry and painting as well as talk about the relationship of their art forms to the tradition of the past and present. Their conversation will also focus on personal experience in art, the relationship of Jewish identity to their work, the economics and politics of art, feminism and their recent book collaboration.
Louise Fishman will be the Studio Art Department's 2007 spring term Artist-In-Residence. Fishman exhibits at Cheim & Read Gallery in New York City. She received a Guggenheim in Painting, three NEAs, and a Gottleib Foundation grant. Her work is included in the Jewish Museum, the Metropolitan Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.
