This course in Russian history will have the standard chronological format, but the emphasis will be on looking at how each period of the past has affected Russia as it is today. Participants with travel or other experience with Russia will be encouraged to share these with the class. A short paperback history of Russia (Geoffrey Hosking, Russia and the Russians: A History, Belknap Press, 2003) will provide a loose framework. Audio/visual materials, maps, some short pieces of literature and material from the recent press will also be used. Class discussion will be encouraged, as will members with special interests who wish to report on them.
BEVERLY ALMGREN received her B.A. from Radcliffe College in English and her Ph.D. in History from Brown University. She taught history at two Philadelphia area colleges for twenty-seven years. Her research interest has focused on the chemist D. I. Mendeleev and his interest in Russian economic development.
