March 26 through April 30, 2003
D.O.C. House
Tom Stoppard, contemporary British playwright, who once said his aim is "to reconcile ideas with laughter," takes up the anti-Marxist Russian revolutionaries exiled in 19th century London in his new trilogy, The Coast Of Utopia. Since many avid theatergoers may be a little weak in this part of Russian history, this course is designed to alternate historical background with discussion of each of the three plays. It should make for a richer theatrical experience when the plays, premiered in London (fall, 2002), get to New York. Open discussion will be the mode, with lecture-like interludes where needed.
Class is limited to 20 participants.
Martha Manheim's Columbia Ph.D. was in comparative drama, with emphasis on Russia.
