Research and Outreach Opportunities: The Department of Education Beyond Coursework

Research Opportunities

Professors in the Education Department actively conduct research that involves undergraduates as both researchers and participants. From writing autobiographical narratives to collecting and analyzing neuroscientific data, undergraduate students are an integral part of our research on learning and development. To find out more, visit our laboratory sites through links on our People pages and monitor the Education Research/Participants Blitz Bulletin.

The School Partnership Program

This program deepens the working relationship between the Department and the surrounding community; specifically, schools in Hanover, Lebanon, and Mascoma in New Hampshire and Hartford in Vermont. Meetings and workshops offer opportunities for discussion and professional development. The Partnership also has a mentor program to match experienced teachers with new teachers. Instructor Jay Davis coordinates this program.

The Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth (SEAD) Program

Co-sponsored with the Tucker Foundation, SEAD provides a unique opportunity for mutual enrichment between Dartmouth students and culturally diverse high school students from exceedingly under-resourced schools. Each summer, SEAD brings low-income students from communities across the United States to campus for two to three weeks of academic and recreational enrichment designed to expand their sense of possibility and nurture a desire to further their education beyond high school. Well over half of the sophomore class is involved with the program during Sophomore Summer. Instructor Jay Davis directs this program. Learn more

The Marshall Islands Programs

Undergraduate students can apply to teach in the Republic of the Marshall Islands during Winter term and recent graduates can spend a year teaching in the Marshall Islands through the Dartmouth Volunteer Teaching Program. Under the supervision of an experienced U.S. teacher and/or Dartmouth Education faculty member, students learn about the challenges of teaching while working with children of a different culture in schools that are grossly under-funded. Professor Andrew Garrod coordinates these programs. Learn more
