A&S Graduate Programs

Greetings!

Dartmouth has a number of exciting graduate programs in the Arts and Sciences that I would like to introduce to you.

There are currently 17 programs that lead to a Doctorate and 7 Masters' programs offered through Arts and Sciences. These programs comprise 500 graduate students. The graduate programs at Dartmouth emphasize close student-faculty ties, rigorous research and scholarship, and excellence in teaching. The typical graduate program consists of students and faculty who work in highly interactive groups of faculty, postdoctoral associates, graduate students and technical support staff. Close research collaboration, access to numerous faculty, and instruction at the seminar level predominate. Specific degree requirements vary from one department to another, however, the overarching goal is the same: to offer a program which provides guided study for strength and breadth within the discipline, combined with an excellent program of research at the frontier of knowledge. As a key part of their training, students learn to conceive, design and write competitive research proposals, and a growing number of Dartmouth graduate students have been the recipients of nationally recognized research awards.

Dartmouth is an institution which has always placed a priority on excellence in college teaching, and which sends many of its doctoral recipients on to careers in academic fields. Keeping with this tradition, a strong teaching experience is also an integral part of the Ph.D. programs. The teaching experience is designed to give students supervised involvement in teaching duties of increasing difficulty and responsibility.

Finally, as Dartmouth Graduate Programs grow and diversify, they continue to adapt curriculum and research concentrations to provide students with numerous opportunities along rapidly developing intellectual fronts. In particular, students are offered many chances for multidisciplinary interaction and research as the programs seek to supplement the specialization commonly associated with graduate study. In addition, a number of exciting projects to enhance the quality of life for the graduate student population are currently underway. These initiatives include plans for a new graduate housing complex, numerous programs focusing on graduate life, (e.g., academic and career programs, enhanced social opportunities for students), and a graduate center facility in the design stage. Dartmouth Graduate Programs are in an exciting and dynamic phase!

Cheers!
