Greece has surprised me in a bunch of different ways. I had expected springtime in Greece to be hot and dry like the summertime but was pleasantly surprised by the rain and both the greenery and the bright wildflowers that were still blooming. However, even though I expected dryness, I never expected to see so many cacti! April in Greece certainly was cooler than I thought it would be (maybe it was a cool year) and before the trip I never dreamed that I would find myself standing on a snow-covered hillside during our second week. I also expected there to be more beaches, but I have been impressed by the quality of the beaches that there are. It is really amazing how clear the blue-green water is and how you can see the sea floor even in really deep water. But again, even though I expected beaches, seeing so many palm trees in Greece was quite a shock for me. In fact, seeing chickens pecking at the ground underneath a palm tree in one of the small, coastal villages that we visited just about blew my mind. The Greek countryside is beautiful and little surprises crop up all over the place. There is too much to say about Greece and it is better to see for oneself anyway, so I highly recommend wandering semi-aimlessly through the countryside and through the city streets to see what crazy and gorgeous can be found!
