Nutrition at Dartmouth

Nutrition links the food we eat to health and disease. Food, in itself, is the fuel our bodies need from basic metabolism to a sprint across the green. The nutrients that food provides are essential for maintenance of life. Most students transitioning from high school to college find themselves, for the first time ever, learning to select their own meals and adjusting food options with academic schedules.

There are many different factors that influence our food choices. Most importantly, the foods we choose to eat affects how we feel, including our energy level, concentration, and memory—our body and brain need the right nutrition to function properly.

Beyond that, food is often a focal point of gathering with friends, represents family culture and traditions, and provides visceral comfort. But sometimes, food can be a source of concern or distress, especially as we attempt to reconcile social messages, pressuring us to consume food mindlessly, AND achieve the "perfect" body.

The internet is rampant with nutrition myths and misinformation, much of it focused on hype and must-have products. In reality, there is no quick-fix when it comes to eating well for both health and pleasure—no food should be totally off-limits. The best approach for a healthy body is to eat with nutrition in mind much of the time, enjoy regular physical activity, and respect your natural body type.

Here at Dartmouth College Health Service, our goal is to help you understand the food choices you make and recommend dietary practices for your good health based on scientific research. We provide you with the knowledge and support to develop a confident and individually-grounded eating style.

The nutritionists at Dick's House work as a team with both Primary Care and Counseling & Human Development to assess your personal needs and assist you with managing specific health concerns or conditions.
