GPA Calculation and Standard Rounding

How to Calculate GPA and Standard Rounding

Dartmouth calculates GPA to 14 decimal points within Banner and follows standard rounding to two decimal places.

GPA Calculation

The basic GPA calculation is as follows:

(Quality points÷GPA Hours)÷3

Quality points come from the grades:

A = 12 quality points
A- = 11 quality points
B+ = 10 quality points
B = 9 quality points
B- = 8 quality points
C+ = 7 quality points
C = 6 quality points
C- = 5 quality points
D = 3 quality points
E = 0 quality points

GPA Hours translate to courses taken, so 1 course = 1 GPA Hour.

Example for a cumulative GPA:

Example for a term GPA:

Quality points: 255

GPA Hours: 30

Quality points: 30

GPA Hours: 3

The calculation is 255/30 = 8.5

The calculation is 30/3 = 10

8.5/3 = 2.83333333333333

10/3 = 3.33333333333333

GPA = 2.83

GPA = 3.33

Standard Rounding

Standard Rounding means that only the number to the right of the final decimal place is used to round.
Examples:

  • (345/31)/3 = 3.7096773 => 3.71
  • (345/32)/3 = 3.59375 => 3.59
  • (345/33)/3 = 3.4848483 => 3.48
         Note this example in particular
