Non-Dartmouth Study Away

Dartmouth College encourages interested students to participate in Dartmouth-sponsored study away programs. Sponsored programs, such as FSP, LSA, or Exchange programs, are administered by the Frank J. Guarini Institute for International Education. Non-Dartmouth programs are administered by the Dartmouth Registrar's Office.

Transfer Terms

Transfer Terms are when a student takes an Off term and independently seeks out an alternate program offered by another institution with the intent to transfer credit to their Dartmouth record.

The Committee on Instruction (COI) is charged with the oversight of transfer terms and the Office of the Registrar administers the transfer term applications on their behalf.

  • Students must seek pre-approval to participate in a transfer term, regardless of the number of credits they intend to transfer.
  • Limits of transfer credit: Students admitted as first-year students may transfer a maximum of four course credits toward the thirty-five required for the Dartmouth degree, whether such credits have been earned prior to matriculation or subsequently.
  • A student participating in a transfer term pays an application fee of $2,200 to Dartmouth for each term of participation, unless they choose to be away Fall term when there is no fee assessed.

Exchange Programs

Dartmouth has several Exchange programs with other institutions. These are considered Dartmouth-sponsored programs. Students apply for Exchange programs through the Frank J. Guarini Institute for International Education. If accepted into a program, students then apply to transfer specific courses to Dartmouth through the Dartmouth Registrar’s Office.
