Internships & Other Leave Term Experiences
The D-plan provides unparalleled opportunities for internships, research and other experiences at any time of the year.
At most schools, students have to fit internships into their summer breaks. That means a lot of competition for the same pool of internships between June and August. At Dartmouth, in addition to summer internships, you have fall, winter, and spring internship opportunities. Most college students can't even apply at these times of year because they're taking classes. Not so for students at Dartmouth.
The flexibility of the D-plan means that you don't need to intern part-time and take classes, too. Choose the best leave term for your needs, and then immerse yourself fully into whatever you want, whenever you want, wherever you want.
Do you love politics? Take a leave term in the fall and work full-time on an election campaign back home or wherever you want to be with a grant from the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy. Looking for a break from winter in Hanover? Take a leave term and work at a school for migrant children in Ghana on a Tucker Fellowship. Is botany your passion? Take a leave term in the spring and study the flowers of New England with a grant from the Biology department. Break free of the arbitrary constraints of the typical semester system and use the entire year to your advantage. The opportunity is all yours, any time of year, to work at the UN World Food Programme in Geneva, at NASA in Houston, at Barclays in London, at Al Jazeera in Kuwait, on Capitol Hill or in Antarctica doing research while it's summer there.
Companies, policy makers, research institutes, and non-governmental organizations appreciate what Dartmouth interns bring to their groups. The D-plan works to their advantage, too: these organizations they get great minds to help them when few others are available to assist. Dartmouth students have opportunities that students at other colleges simply can never have.
If you need funding to make your leave-term a success you can apply for Dartmouth grants from centers on campus like the Tucker Foundation, the Dickey Center for International Understanding, the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy, and the Financial Aid Office.
