The Dartmouth Plan: Introduction
A Flexible Study Plan
The D-Plan is Dartmouth's year-round quarter system.
Our students pack more adventures into every year because so many opportunities are available year round. Your D-Plan is your personal enrollment pattern. You get to decide on your own personal study plan in the spring of your first year.
What You Need to Know
There are three types of terms with four academic quarters to customize. You designate when you'll be on campus and when you'll take Dartmouth into the world with you.
Types of Terms
- Terms in Residence: This is when you are in Hanover and enrolled in classes.
- Terms Off-Campus: This is when you are enrolled in one of Dartmouth's Language Study Abroad or Foreign Study Programs, or you are enrolled taking classes at another institution that will transfer credits.
- Leave Terms: This is when you are not enrolled. You could get an internship, find a job, do research, or travel.

Can I be on campus for summers other than in my sophomore year?
Yes. You can choose to enroll in more than one summer term if you'd like to (and it's a beautiful time of year to be on campus).
