The African and African American Studies (AAAS) Program at Dartmouth College originated in 1969, making it one of the oldest programs of its kind in the nation. Utilizing innovative avenues of theoretical and empirical investigations, students explore the questions and issues at the center of historical, social, political and cultural dimensions shaping the constructions and transformations of the African diaspora within a global context.
The AAAS program extends warm congratulations to:
- Professor Celia Naylor who received the John M. Manley Huntington Award for Newly Tenured Faculty. She also recently published African Cherokees in Indian Territory: From Chattel to Citizens. This book focuses on the 19th-century experiences of enslaved and free people of African descent in the Cherokee Nation.
- AAAS major Dustin McMahon '08 who received the Gary Love Prize in African and African American Studies for the "student with the most successfully completed research project as part of the AAAS program."
- AAAS minor Shamis Mohamud '08 who received the Pamela Joyner Prize in African and African American Studies for the "best graduating senior who has taken at least four AAAS courses."
