NOTES ON THE IMAGES:
Top and second row: parade of horsemen (decursio scene); funeral rites for the emperor Antoninus Pius. Lower two rows: apotheosis of Antoninus Pius and Faustina (the empress is veiled, or "velate"). The scene includes a personification of the Campus Martius (reclining figure with obelisk) in lower left corner and the seated goddess Roma, dressed in the garb of an Amazon. The emperor and empress are carried skywards on the back of a winged deity whom some have identified as "aeternitas."
