QBS Admissions Requirements

It is the long-standing policy of Dartmouth College to actively support equality of opportunity for all persons regardless of race or ethnic background, and no student will be denied admission or be otherwise discriminated against because of race, color, gender, religion, age, national or ethnic origin. There is no quota for the number of international students we enroll each year. Education at Dartmouth thrives in a unique rural community of students and faculty who value differences and promote camaraderie and teamwork in order to learn from one another. The QBS Program strongly encourages applications from students of diverse backgrounds and cultures. The varied experience and interests they bring strengthen the Program and enriches the educational environment for all. A number of opportunities are also available for minority students through various programs and the office of the Director of Graduate Recruiting and Diversity in the Graduate Studies Office at Dartmouth College.

Admissions Information

Only students who intend to pursue a PhD degree full-time are accepted into the program. Admission into the QBS Program is based on appraisal of each applicant's undergraduate academic record, Graduate Record Examination Scores (GRE), letters of recommendation, involvement in research or other activities which indicate a strong commitment to graduate study, and the personal statement of goals. The GRE requirement includes the quantitative, analytical writing, and verbal exams.

Applicants for whom English is not their native language and who have not attended an English-speaking institution must provide the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). We will also accept IELTS scores with band scores of 7.0 or higher. QBS students are expected to be able to communicate easily and fluently in written and verbal English.

It is expected that all entering graduate students will have had course work in the quantitative sciences such as biology, epidemiology, computer science, mathematics, or bioinformatics. Students with degrees in bioinformatics, biological sciences, computer sciences, engineering, epidemiology, mathematics, medical sciences, physical sciences, public health, statistics and related areas such as anthropology and psychology are encouraged to apply. Deficiencies in basic undergraduate courses may be remedied in the first year of graduate school. Applicants are encouraged to note any prior research experience relevant to the scientific programs being pursued in QBS laboratories. Such experience is particularly important for international applicants.

Financial Information

All QBS students receive a Dartmouth Fellowship that provides a full tuition scholarship, a prepaid health insurance plan, and a student stipend for each year they are in the program. The student stipend for 2017-201 is $29,070 ($29,570 for students who have passed their qualifying exams). Stipends for future years will be adjusted for inflation and are contingent upon satisfactory performance in studies. We do not offer financial aid beyond the Fellowship.

We do not require certification of your financial situation. If admitted to the program you will need sufficient funds to come to the U.S. and then support yourself for one month until the first stipend check which is on October 1.
