This makes a firm oatmeal. Use up to 2 cups more liquid if you prefer yours soupy. To serve it, put a little of the fruit mixture, yogurt, and granola or nuts on each bowl, and pass the rest.

1¾ c | apple juice or cider | ½ tsp | salt |
7 oz | mixed dried fruit bits | 3 c | water, or make half of it milk. |
1/3 c | packed brown sugar | 3 c | quick-cooking oats |
3-inch stick or ½ tsp ground | cinnamon | 2 6-oz containers | vanilla yogurt |
2 medium | pears, cored and chopped | 1 c | granola or chopped toasted nuts (walnuts or pecans) |
Prep
- chop dried fruit to desired size
- toast nuts if using
Cook & serve
- In saucepan combine juice, fruit bits, sugar, and cinnamon. Bring to boiling. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, 20 minutes.
- Add pears. Cook, covered, 10 minutes.
- Cool; remove cinnamon stick.
- Drain, discard liquid.
- In saucepan bring water and salt to boiling. Add oats. Reduce heat to medium; cook about 1 minute, stirring occasionally.
- To serve, top with fruit mixture, yogurt, and granola or nuts.
