Research at Rauner

COVID-19 Research Precautions

Dear Dartmouth Community Researchers:

As Rauner Library begins reopening on limited terms, we ask that you familiarize yourself with the following information:

Hours:

Onsite research will be limited to Dartmouth faculty, staff, and graduate students living locally. Visits will occur on an appointment-only basis, Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Appointments need to be made at least one working day in advance (two if using Records Management collections) so that we can adequately prepare materials.

To ensure proper social distancing, we are currently limiting Rauner library use to a maximum of 6 researchers and 5 library staff per day (a maximum daily occupancy of 11 people).

How to Make an Appointment:

  • Email us at rauner.special.collections.reference@dartmouth.edu.
  • In many cases, we’ll want to start with a conversation via e-mail or Zoom about your needs before scheduling a time for your visit.
  • If you know what materials you’ll need to look at, let us know what they are.
  • If you’re not sure what you need, we can help you identify materials and set up an appointment for a later date.
  • Please keep in mind that we will need at least one working day in advance of your visit, and sometimes more based on materials and availability.

What to Expect During Your Visit:

Before your visit, be sure to complete a COVID-19 Health Screening: https://www.dartgo.org/tsa. For location purposes, we are "Rauner Special Collections Library/Webster Hall".

Upon arriving for your appointment, please ensure that you are wearing a mask. We require a mask to be worn at all times for everyone’s safety. A staff member will admit you to the building and direct you to a table which has been thoroughly cleaned at least 22 hours in advance. You will be the only person occupying your table for that day. Your requested materials have been placed on a book truck next to said table.

Your table will also be stocked with book cradles, weights, and forms & folders for reproduction requests. Let us know when you make your appointment if you will need anything in addition to these supplies, such as a light table, magnifying glass, etc.

We recommend bringing your own camera or phone if you need images of materials, as scan orders will be significantly delayed by quarantine and staffing requirements. A camera stand with a smartphone mount will be available if needed; we ask that you wipe it down both before and after any usage.

If you have questions during your visit, please use the blue and gray "Welcome to LibChat" field at the bottom of this page to contact the reference desk staff instead of approaching the desk and speaking to them directly (or speaking across the room). This will help keep everyone safe and also ensure that the Reading Room remains a quiet place for research.

Once you are done, please inform desk staff and place your research materials back on the book truck. The staff member will escort you out before placing the truck in isolation for a 72-hour quarantine. Your table will then be cleaned and allowed to sit for 24 hours before its next usage.

We appreciate your patience and care during this time.
