Richard: "And then of course Pearl Harbor came on December 7th of our freshman year. And that, you know, things changed dramatically at that time. Not that it impacted us right away, but it did by the end of the summer of '42."

Barbara: "One thing I remember about the war years is a student who was at Dartmouth at the time of Pearl Harbor. [His name was] Takanobu Mitsui whose family was the Mitsui industry of Japan. He was interned on the campus and he could not leave Hanover. We thought that was so strange that here was this student and just because he was Japanese he was all of a sudden … interned here for the duration of the war."
