James: "One of my classmates' father wrote the GI Bill.... Harry Colmery. He came from Topeka, Kansas. In 1944, his father was then a WWI veteran and he was also the national adjutant of the American Legion and they wanted to do something for the veterans and so he went down [to Washington, DC].... In the Mayflower Hotel, on the second floor, there is a plaque and it says, 'Here in July, 1944, National Adjutant Harry Colmery wrote the GI Bill which he presented to Congress the very next day.'"
