Ruthe: "A couple of organizations had contacted [Chet] and told him if he ever got called up for the draft to let them know… They wanted him to work for them [because of his training as a physicist and skilled officer] … There were other people down at Oakridge, where the Manhattan Project was in Tennessee, who were drafted and were soldiers and could not bring their families there or anything but he was able to bring his family down and work as a civilian."
