Sixth Annual JMC 48 Hour Video Contest!

Dartmouth Library's Jones Media Center will be hosting the Sixth Annual 48 Hour Video Contest during Fall term! Dates are Friday, September 29 - Sunday, October 1! Sign up as a team or sign up solo. At least one person from your team must be a Dartmouth student, faculty or staff and must attend the mandatory kick off meeting in the Jones Media Center (second floor of Baker-Berry Library) at 4:00 pm on Friday, September 29. There you will receive a line of dialogue and an object that must appear in the video. All participants (teams or individual) will have free access to all of our equipment such as DSLR cameras, a variety of lenses, GoPro cameras, Vixia HD cameras, Manfrotto tripods, various light kits, Zoom audio recorders, wireless lavalier microphones, boom poles and shotgun microphones, portable green screens and more! Registering early will give you first dibs on our equipment. Check out our Equipment Loan page to plan ahead what you would like to reserve (Some limitations apply). You will have until 5:00 pm on Sunday, October 1 to complete your video.

Join us for food and screening of the videos at 8:00 pm on Sunday, October 1. Location: Innovation Studio in the Jones Media Center

Please read the rules and regulations below before registering. Only one person from your team should register on behalf of everyone. (But just in case you're coming back and looking for the link here ya go:  dartgo.org/JMC48hrs.). 

 

Rules and Regulations

  1. Participating teams have just 48 hours to make a short video. All creative work - writing, rehearsals, costume, set design, shooting, editing and adding musical soundtracks must occur within the 48 hour time period starting at 5pm on Friday, September 29 and ending at 5pm Sunday, October 1 2023.

    Groups or Individuals can register online or at the kick off meeting, Friday, September 29 at 4:00 pm in the Jones Media Center Innovation Studio. Regardless of where they sign-up, a member of each team MUST be present at the kickoff meeting to participate. The meeting is where they will receive a line of dialogue and a prop that must be used in the video.

    All films must abide by the following:

    ● Include JMC contest prop and line of dialogue.

    ● Film duration maximum 4 minutes including credits.

    ● At least one member of the production team must be Dartmouth student, faculty, or staff.

    ● Include the 48 hour video contest bumper at the end of the video.

    ● Submit final project in file formats such as QuickTime (.mov) or MPEG (.mp4). Instructions will be provided. Files must be delivered by 5:00 pm, Sunday, October 1. Screening and Awards Presentation will be Sunday, October 1 at 8:00 pm. Location JMC Innovation Studio

    ● Where necessary, must receive permission from locations and individuals that appear in the film.

    ● Cannot use copyrighted materials in the final project. Please see JMC’s Multimedia Resource Guide for copyright free music, images, and video.

    ● Movie production must not break any federal, state, local, or campus laws.


    Regulations: Entries must be original work of the team, must not infringe on third parties rights, must be suitable for public screening, and cannot be obscene. It may not contain defamatory statements about any person, company, organization or entity, may not invade privacy or other rights of any person, company or entity; may not in any other way violate applicable laws and regulations, and may not contain copyrighted elements. Entries containing prohibited or inappropriate content as determined by the judging panel, at its sole discretion, will be disqualified.


    Equipment: If you have your own equipment or can acquire your own equipment, go for it! If you wish to use Jones Media Center equipment then you must sign it out using a Dartmouth library card. Groups/Individuals who register first receive priority over equipment they would like to reserve for the event. Some restrictions apply! See our Equipment Loan Program page.


    Materials to be Submitted:​ All teams must submit their final project in file formats such as QuickTime (.mov) or MPEG (.mp4) to a specified location. Instructions to come. Submissions must be received by 5:00pm Sunday October 1 2023.

    Judging: Projects will be scored via rubric by a panel of judges. The judges will award first, second, and third place winners. The Audience will also get a popular vote, of which that film will win a prize as well.

    Screening: All entries will be presented at 8:00 pm on Sunday, October 1 (three hours after the films are due). Location TBD. There will be food and drink and all are welcome to attend. All projects will also be posted on the 48 Hour Video Contest playlist.


    Final Comments:​ All costs associated with the production of the 48 hour video contest are solely the responsibility of each respective team. By participating, team members agree to the Official Rules, which are final and binding in all respects.
