Library Mission and Goals - FY 2007

Mission Statement

The Dartmouth College Library fosters intellectual growth and advances the teaching and research missions of Dartmouth College by supporting excellence and innovation in education and research, managing and delivering scholarly content, and partnering in the development and dissemination of new scholarship.

Library-wide

  • Redesign and implement a new Dartmouth College Library website.
  • Complete the Mellon/Duke/Dartmouth project. Provide leadership in creating a 5-year campus-wide digital infrastructure plan outlining standards, policies, technology needs, and partnerships. Explore the concept of a digital repository.
  • Provide campus leadership in determining digital records management needs and in identifying potential solutions (Documentum, etc.). Address recommendations of the Digital Document and Records Management Task Force.
  • Review/enhance Library development efforts: Campaign for the Dartmouth Experience, Library Council, Friends of the Dartmouth Library. Development a donor stewardship strategy/plan.
  • Develop a sense of shared mission with new leadership in Peter Kiewit Computing Services.
  • Continue implementation of Library commitments to the CCEN project.
  • Engage and educate the Dartmouth community on scholarly communication and other information issues through public lectures and other means.
  • Evaluate the Library's digital publishing program.
  • Review current assesment activities and look for other opportunities to improve Library services and operations through assessment.
  • Strengthen cross-campus relationships and seek opportunities for collaboration.
  • Evaluate internal Library communications. Evaluate the need/options for a communications officer.

Budget & Grants

  • Assess budget impacts of a Library system-wide strategic plan for collection building.
  • Develop policy for allocating staff development budget.
  • Participate as appropriate in the campus-wide migration to the new OASIS financial management system.

Collections Access

  • Review DartDoc and Borrow Direct services: needed staffing levels, technology options, service enhancements.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the e-Reserves service and its impact on the Library's budget and operations; plan for future growth. Improve integration of e-reserves and campus course management software.
  • Assess the effectiveness of the e-Reserves service and its impact on the Library's budget and operations; plan for future growth including projected disk storage needs. Improve integration of ereserves and campus course management software. Create unified systemwide service statement.
  • Create a plan for filling the remaining space in the Storage Library, balancing the storage needs of all campus libraries.
  • Implement, publicize and evaluate federated searching via WebFeat.
  • Evaluate public access to copiers and scanners. Determine color photocopier needs.
  • Enhance access to Library services for students and other users with disabilities.

Collection Development & Management

  • Develop Library system-wide strategic plan for collection building.
  • Conserve and digitize the U.S. Serial Set in partnership with Readex Corporation. With Readex, evaluate operations including staffing levels.
  • Implement the Electronic Resource Management module of Innopac.
  • Integrate the duties of the new Digital Resources Coordinator position into Library workflows.
  • Assess options for long-term digital archiving, including Portico and LOCKSS.
  • Explore options for digital content management, including CONTENTdm and ARTstor.
  • Develop a set of principles for prioritizing digital projects and initiatives, including impacts on staffing, budget, operations and services.
  • Maintain and enhance accurate and timely processing for all new library materials to provide a high level of support for customer service.
  • Develop a policy for sharing Dartmouth College Library digital content including, where applicable, meta-data harvesting.
  • Evaluate Dartmouth's celluloid film collection and determine the Library's responsibilty for maintenance of and access to it.
  • Provide better access to Dartmouth's unique digital and paperbased collections through the creation and maintenance of metadata. Explore uses of these metadata to enhance exposure and management of these collections.
  • Evaluate membership in the Center for Research Libraries. Publicize to our users. Implement use and evaluate success of the program.
  • Discover, evaluate, test and implement new and existing Library Catalog features to cultivate its full capabilities as a Library discovery tool, with a particular emphasis on the new Web Pac Pro.

Education & Research

  • Expand librarian-faculty collaboration in teaching and research, including collaboration with the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL).
  • Enhance the role of the Library in the first year experience (including writing courses and orientation).
  • Further develop outreach and services to graduate and international students.
  • Enhance outreach to new faculty and to new programs at the College.
  • Review and coordinate services at the various Library and Computing service points, including the number and location of service points as well as the types of services offered at each.
  • Evaluate reference service models, including on-site and virtual reference, chat, im, knowledge management, Q&A tracking, and statistics.
  • Explore with Peter Kiewit Computing Services and various campus student services a "learning commons" concept for collaborative learning enterprises like RWIT.
  • Extend the scope of the education program by including more Library staff.
  • Support and promote the introduction of new services and programs such as federated searching and access to the Center for Research Libraries.
  • Investigate collaborative tools such as wikis, blogs, collborative writing software, and desktop videoconferencing to support group projects.

Facilities/Infrastructure Management

  • Maintain ongoing 5-year space plan for collections, service programs, and staff operations in all Library facilities, including an assessment of space needs, physical maintenance, and safety and security.
  • Strengthen desktop computer support in collaboration with Peter Kiewit Computing Services.
  • Determine best Library utilization of space vacated by the Dickey Center on the second level of Baker Library, southeast wing.
  • Complete security audits of all Library facilities.
  • Review and update the Library's disaster plan, including business continuity planning. Current plan only addresses collection disasters.
  • Create a building program and identify various options for a new or expanded off-campus collections storage facility.
  • Develop plans, in coordination with the Tuck School and the Thayer School, for significant renovations to Feldberg Library.
  • Develop plans, in coordination with the Dartmouth Medical School, for Biomedical Libraries reconfiguration and renovation.

Information Technology

  • Respond to campus changes in network authentication and the digital security environment.
  • Participate in the campus single-signon project.
  • Strategize with Peter Kiewit Computing Services to optimally support Library users' needs for information technology in the various campus libraries.

Marketing & Communications

  • Develop a marketing plan for the Dartmouth College Library including the establishment of priorities and options.
  • Develop a budget for various marketing and communications options.

Staff Development & Human Resource Management

  • Deploy a new staff orientation program. Enhance the existing spotlight series.
  • Develop a Lunch and Learn program for staff development and diversity education.
  • Maintain and continue to enhance a high level of customer service. Develop student employee training programs.
  • Welcome and introduce two associate directors to Dartmouth College Library, replacing two directors who are retiring.
  • Explore career development options, including possible broadening of career ladders, for non-exempt Library staff.
  • Enhance Library recruiting and hiring processes for both exempt and non-exempt staff positions. Document standard procedures.
  • Explore staff development options, including cross-departmental training and job visiting programs. (Delay a year on this goal??)
  • Evaluate the recently introduced staff bonus program.
