Procedures for processing books with copy lacking complete call numbers

(I-level and Fastcat work flows)

Scope

This document describes basic procedures for processing new books when copy is found that meets fastcat or I-level cataloging standards, but which lacks a useable LC call number.

DLC and PCC records containing a single incomplete (stem only) LC call number

  • Searchers put DLC copy containing a stem LC call number on the fastcat shelves.
  • Fastcat catalogers will complete stem numbers and finish processing.
  • Any call number questions should be referred to a supervisor.

I-level records containing a single incomplete (stem only) LC call number

  • Searchers will mark items for I-level work flow and place on I-level shelves.
  • I-level catalogers will complete stem numbers and process materials according to I-level guidelines. Catalogers will add call number in an 090 in OCLC, and replace the record.
  • Any call number questions should be referred to a supervisor.

DLC and PCC records lacking an LC call number or containing only an analytic call number

  • Searchers will put books with LC or PCC copy lacking an acceptable call number on fastcat shelves.
  • Fastcat catalogers will search titles one more time to make sure there is no acceptable copy with an LC call number. If more complete copy is found, catalogers  will process according to the guidelines for that type of copy.
  • If more complete copy is not found, fastcat catalogers will put a print-out in book and place on cataloging shelf.
  • Catalogers staffing cataloging shelf will assign a call number, write it on the print-out and place book with print-out back on Fastcat shelf.
  • Fastcat catalogers will complete cataloging, and add assigned call number to the record.

I-level records lacking an LC call number

  • Searchers will mark items for I-level work flow and place on I-level shelves
  • I-level catalogers will search titles one more time to make sure there is no acceptable copy with an LC call number. If more complete copy is found, catalogers  will process according to the guidelines for that type of copy.
  • If more complete cataloging is not found, I-level catalogers will check record according to I-level guidelines, and , if it matches, place book on cataloging shelf with print-out marked w/ initials.
  • Catalogers staffing cataloging shelf will assign a call number, write it on the print-out and return book to the I-level cataloger to complete. I-level catalogers will add call number in an 090 in OCLC and replace record.
