Monographs

For monographs, volumes in a given call number are in copy order, regardless of location.

[made up example]

ITEM 02 > COPY #: 1; LOCATION: bakr; VOLUME=v.1-3
ITEM 03 > COPY #: 1; LOCATION: bakr; VOLUME=v.1
ITEM 04 > COPY #: 1; LOCATION: bakr; VOLUME=v.2
ITEM 05 > COPY #: 1; LOCATION: bakr; VOLUME=v.3
ITEM 06 > COPY #: 2; LOCATION: artl; VOLUME=v.1-3
ITEM 07 > COPY #: 2; LOCATION: artl; VOLUME=v.1
ITEM 08 > COPY #: 2; LOCATION: artl; VOLUME=v.2
ITEM 09 > COPY #: 2; LOCATION: artl; VOLUME=v.3

ITEM 11 > COPY #: 3; LOCATION: bakr; VOLUME=v.1
ITEM 12 > COPY #: 3; LOCATION: bakr; VOLUME=v.2

When more than one call number is used, there will be more than one copy-number sequence.

Multiparts

For multiparts, each summary holdings record immediately precedes the set of related volumes (all copy 1 volumes with summary holdings first, then all copy 2, etc.). Summary holdings records are created for all added copies. As for monographs, more than one call number means more than one copy-number sequence.

Summary Holdings

Summary holdings records for serials are grouped together at the beginning of all item records. Individual volume item records should follow, grouped by location in the same order as the summaries, with latest volumes last (so that Storage holdings may appear first for a given "run"). No summary holdings record is created for copy 2s. The item record for any copy 2 [etc.] volume should immediately follow the volume it duplicates. Note that rules for added copies are different for serials than for monographs.

There has been no consistent order for listing summary holdings statements. For new titles, it is recommended to list current holdings first, alpha by location, followed by non-current holdings (alpha by location), with Storage holdings listed after the source library. Since it is unknown how the implementation of the MARC holdings format will affect the question of how we list holdings, it does not make sense to put any effort into reordering existing holdings statements at this time.
