WebPac Implementation Team : URL Subgroup

Charge

Background

When URLs first appeared in bibliographic records we devised procedures for how to encode the data in our local records to facilitate its use in the public (BRS) catalog.  This entailed copying the active URL(s) from the 856 in the Bibliographic record to an item call number.

Innovative designed a different solution to the problem of how to make URL's clickable.  Our solution presents redundant information to the user and in the case of the item record results in a non-obvious action when the link is activated.

Issues to be addressed by the subgroup

  1. Recollect the reasons for the current practice of copying URLs to an item call number field (developed for the BRS catalog) and determine whether those reasons exist for the INNOPAC OPAC (including order record procedures)
  2. Research the current MARC standard for data to be included in the 856. Determine which subfields of the 856 are being utilized currently at Dartmouth as well as what we typically see in imported records.  Based on current practice, make a recommendation to the Post-Search Functionality Group as to which 856 subfields are appropriate to display to the public.  Does Innopac support the use of the 856 indicators?
  3. Determine an interim solution that would continue to make item records holding URL call numbers available to the public (BRS) catalog while at the same time suppressing those items from the Web OPAC.
  4. Are there other uses of the items holding URL call numbers that need to be addressed?  For instance, statistics?
  5. What problems do multiple 856's present?  Define a solution.
  6. Some item records contain holdings information for the electronic journal. Propose a new home for this information.
  7. Complete work by Nov 15th with a written recommendation to the WebPAC Team.
