An employer funded plan that helps reduce your annual deductible and coinsurance costs during the plan year.

The HRA is funded by Dartmouth College to help you pay for some of the costs of covered health care expenses.

  • At the start of the plan year Dartmouth College deposits a specific dollar amount in your HRA.
    • Individual:  $500 per calendar year
    • Family of 2 or more:  $1,000 per calendar year
  • In most cases, your in-network doctor will not collect any money from you at the time of your visit.  Instead, your doctor will send the claim directly to Cigna.
  • If there is money available in your HRA, your account is used to pay 100% of deductibles and coinsurance until the money is used up.
    • To determine what expenses to your deductible and/or coinsurance, visit the medical plan comparison chart (pdf).
    • Cigna will process the claim and determine payment for eligible services.
    • Cigna pays your doctor directly from your HRA account
    • You receive an explanation of benefits (EOB) that confirms the amount that was paid from your account.  It will also tell you how much money is left in your account.
  • Once the account is exhausted, or if the expense is not covered on your plan:
    • You will receive an explanation of benefits  (EOB), letting you know that you are responsible for payment to your doctor and how much you owe.
    • Your doctor will bill you directly for any amount that you owe.
  • Unused money may be available to you if you re-enroll in the plan the following year.
  • No tax filing or reporting
  • No substantiation of claims
  • May be used in conjunction with a Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA)

All benefits eligible employees who elect the Cigna Choice Fund (CCF) or all benefits eligible employees who are Dartmouth Health Connect patients who elect the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in 2017 are eligible to receive an HRA contribution in their name.  Because J1 Visa holders are not eligible to participate in the CCF or HDHP health plans, they are not eligible to receive the emp loyer HRA contribution.

Covered Dependents

Your HRA dollars may be used to pay health care expenses for all members of your family, covered on your Cigna health plan.

Eligible Expenses

The health care costs that are paid from your HRA typically count toward your deductible (the amount you pay before your plan starts to pay, reducing your share), and your coinsurance (the amount you and your plan share, once you reach your deductible)

Depending on the health plan you choose in 2017, Dartmouth College may make a contribution into a tax savings account in your name.
