1.  How do I ship mice to another institution?

Complete the “Animal Shipment Form” and submit to the shipping coordinator (Veterinary Staff). Mark cages with a “Transfer” card.

2.  How do I get an AR number?

With the new eSirius system, AR numbers are no longer needed, please see question #6 for further instructions.

3.  How do I import animals from another institution or non-approved vendor?

Obtain an AR number (see #2), and complete the “Request to Import Animals from Non-Approved Vendor / Institution” form and submit to the shipping coordinator (Veterinary Staff).

4.  How do I transfer mice to another PI?

Complete an “Animal Transfer Form” and submit to the CCMR office. Transfers between PI’s require IACUC approval, so please remember to complete the transfer process before beginning any work. Mark the cages with a “Transfer Card”.

5.  How do I get another cage card when I am splitting up a cage of mice?

All PIs should have a stack of cage cards in their respective rooms that can be used when weaning or splitting cages.  To wean or split, tear off the bottom tab of the cage card, indicate the number of animals and whether this is a wean or split and provide the date that of the wean/split.  Once completed turn the tab into the CCMR office.

To order wean/split cards, log into eSirius, select the protocol and USDA category you are requesting cards from and then click "request weaning/splitting cards".  Next, fill in the required fields and the number of cage cards needed, click "save" and "submit".  The CCMR office will print the cage cards and those cards will be placed in the correct room.

6.  How do I place a mouse order?

Log into eSirius using your Dartmouth DND credentials.  Select the protocol and USDA category that you wish to order from and click "Order Animals" then choose the vendor.  To add the animal information, highlight "item 1" under the "item info" for the first line of the order and then click "edit" which will opens the window to add all of the animal ordering information, once completed, hit "save" and then "submit".  The order will be automatically sent to the CCMR and the order will then be placed with the vendor.

7.  How do I receive additional training?

Contact the CCMR or IACUC offices for names of trainers/veterinarians.

8. How do I transfer mice from the barrier to the non barrier?

Request a cart (see #9) and move the cages.

Complete a “request for supplies” form found by the door to the clean cage room.

13.  How do I get cell lines tested?

Submit samples to the Lab Animal technologist with an account number to charge. Preparation of samples --- send one cryovial of each sample containing a minimum of ~106-107 cells/vial. Cells may be in the form of a pellet or in growth media, freeze media or phosphate-buffered saline. To test liquid samples by the IMPACT, it is optimal if you send one cryovial of each sample with 0.5 ml of sample/vial.

14.  How do I transfer mice from one facility to another?

Complete an “Animal Transfer Form” and submit to the CCMR office. The request will then be given to the technologist for transport. Please allow 48 hours for your request to be processed.

15.  How do I access technical support from the CCMR?

Contact the CCMR office for the names of technologists/technicians and identify your requests.

16.  How much does it cost for technical support?

Rates are updated at the start of each fiscal year; refer to the CCMR per diem rates for more information.

17.  How do I transfer mice into a biohazard area?

Complete an “Animal Transfer Form”, changing the cost center from “STD” to “ISO”, and the room location change. Then the mice may be moved.

18.  How do I make amendments/changes to my protocol?

Contact the IACUC office at Institutional.Animal.Care.Use.Committee@Dartmouth.edu.

19.  How do I add personnel to my protocol?

Contact the IACUC office to add new personnel to the personnel part of the protocol.

20.  How do I use the anesthesia machines?

There are instructions posted on the anesthesia machines. If you need additional information, contact the CCMR office to contact one of the lab animal technologists for more information and/or training.

21.  How do I access an anesthesia machine to use in my lab?

The anesthesia machines from the non-barrier areas are available for short term use in the lab. Please sign up for the use of these machines by emailing the CCMR.

22.  How do I order veterinary supplies for my lab?

As of October, 2013 the CCMR will be offering centralized ordering, contact the CCMR office to place animal and specialty veterinary supply orders. You will need to provide an account number to charge, the catalog number/quantity of the item and a direct link to the item, specialty supply orders should be placed via email ONLY.  Animal orders should be placed through the online ordering system by 12pm on Thursdays.

23.  How do I get staff to check/health concern on one of my animals?

Please complete a “health check” card and place on the cage, and email the “Borwell Animal Techs” (or Vail Animal Techs, Moore Animal Techs depending on your location). If urgent please contact the CCMR office directly and they can page one of the veterinary staff. After hours please contact the “On call Veterinary Staff”—signs are posted near the entrances to the facilities.

24.  How do I get injectable anesthesia/analgesics?

Please contact one of the Lab Animal Technologists (or contact the CCMR office) for substances in stock (special orders please see # 22). Please specify type of drug, dose (i.e., for rats or mice), and provide an account number to charge. Please allow 24-48 hours notice. Any controlled substance drugs must have a signed “Animal Controlled Substance Request and Authorized Form” on file. For more information see IACUC Controlled Substance Policy,

 

25.  What are the doses of injectable anesthesia/analgesics?

The facility tours are scheduled bi-monthly. The dates and times are posted outside of the CCMR office. Other times/dates may be available upon request. Training classes are scheduled regularly, contact the CCMR for dates. Pre-registration is required for all training classes.
