From Art to Artifact:  Making Sense of Roman Coins

Sestertius of Nero

Minted from 63-66 CE in Rome, Nero’s ‘non-globe type’ sestertii have been found in hoards all across the Roman world in places like The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Croatia and, in greatest quantity, on the Italian peninsula.

Although information about the Temple of Janus sestertius issue from 66 CE has not been gleaned from the published hoards, examining the circulation of specimins of the same denomination and mint of origin reveals how the Hood’s coin might have circulated.
