From Art to Artifact:  Making Sense of Roman Coins

Coin of Julia Domna

Septimius Severus moved the main mint from Lugdunum to Rome after defeating his rivals, Albinus and Niger, for the title of Emperor. According to Syndeham’s Roman Imperial Coinage, no evidence exists for additional production of silver denarii beyond Rome during the Severan reign.

Coins of Julia Domna have been found across the Roman Empire, however little data exists regarding the exact locations of hoards including Domna’s coins. In 1964 Philip Hall produced a study locating the hoards of Septimius Severus and his family, though any data specific to Julia Domna was not included.
