Information for Faculty

The Book Arts Workshop studios are available to faculty for curricular support. Classes such as ENGL History of the Book, COSI Computational Fabrication, SART Photography, FILM Mass Media and Democracy, COCO Book Arts Studio Seminar and many others have met in the studios with workshop instructors to work on projects of varying length: one – two session projects, half term projects, or for the entire term. If you would like to use the workshop for a classroom assignment please contact Sarah M. Smith as early as possible. This will allow us to assist you in designing the exercise, confirming schedules, and obtaining any necessary supplies. This set of questions will help with planning for your project:

We always welcome the use of the workshop by individual students to complete coursework. If you have students interested in taking advantage of the workshop for a project, the following points are helpful to keep in mind:

  • We have Open Studio sessions when students (and faculty) can stop in and discuss an idea and plan of action. It’s best to come in or email well before a due date to get an idea of what may be involved with a project.
  • We require completion of a Letterpress Orientation session before working in the letterpress studio. All of these sessions fill up quickly and have waitlists, so it's best to sign up for one as soon as possible. We will try, when possible, to add students working on curricular projects to full sessions, but they need to contact Sarah M. Smith or to make special arrangements.
  • We don’t require an orientation session for bookbinding. However, there are some basic workshop style classes we offer that may help students get started with a project. They are: Introduction to Bookbinding: Making a Pamphlet and Introduction to Bookbinding: 3 Basic Structures. Students may also come into Open Studio sessions, look at the collection of book models and speak with an instructor.

If you think you have students that will need to use the studio space, please urge them to stop in or sign up for a workshop early.

They also can join the Dartmouth-Book-Arts listserv.
