Our History

Founded in 1769, Dartmouth is more than one of the nation’s nine colonial colleges; it is a community grounded in a tradition of bold ideas, transformative teaching, and enduring purpose. For over 250 years, we’ve been educating the next generation of leaders while pushing the boundaries of discovery, equity, and human potential. If you're considering joining Dartmouth as a member of our staff or faculty, know that you’re stepping into a workplace that values curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to making a difference.

Nestled in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire, Dartmouth’s 269-acre main campus offers more than stunning views of the Connecticut River and the White Mountains. It offers a dynamic and inclusive environment where individuals from all backgrounds come together to explore, create, and lead. Our setting is rural, but our reach is global through research, innovation, and education that cross disciplines and borders.

Dartmouth is a liberal arts college and a research university. We’re home to four renowned graduate and professional schools: the Geisel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering, the Tuck School of Business, and the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. Our faculty and staff are at the forefront of fields as diverse as climate science, artificial intelligence, literature, medicine, and economics.

Innovation has always been part of our DNA. The 1956 Dartmouth Workshop is widely considered the birthplace of artificial intelligence. Our faculty developed the BASIC programming language, revolutionizing computer science education. And in recent years, Dartmouth researchers contributed to the foundational science behind the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, led the way in imaging sensor technology, and launched a $500 million climate initiative to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Our values are not only historic but ongoing. Dartmouth was one of the first institutions to create a Native American Program in the 1970s. Today, inclusion and belonging are embedded in our strategic priorities and organizational culture. As an employer, we are committed to providing an environment where every employee can thrive.

Join us at Dartmouth—where your career can be part of a legacy of excellence and a future of discovery.
